Welcome to Disaster Management Web Portal

Nashik is a multi-hazard-prone city, and is occasionally affected by heavy rainfall during monsoon that causes flooding in the city. Generally, the city receives rainfall from the Southwest Monsoon between June to October. The city has a history of floods in the years 2008, 2009, 2012, 2018 and 2019 that impacted several low-lying areas. As the city is located on the banks of the Godavari River, it gets flooded due to overflow of the river causing inundation of the built environment spread into floodplains. The city is also susceptible to other hazards namely cyclonic winds, landslides (confined to a local area), fires, building collapse, and other biological hazards and chemical accidents. Nashik also hosts Kumbh Mela that attracts millions of devotees. Hence, crowd management is also an important challenge as well. As to urbanization, the city is growing by leaps and bounds aggravating urban challenges.

The projected impact of climate change is highly likely to alter the frequencies and severity of hydro-meteorological hazards giving rise to complex and cascading urban risks. The case for improving the resilience of the city is of immense need that requires efficient coordination and planning among various stakeholders. Urban local authorities and stakeholders have a critical role in understanding, mitigating, and managing urban risk and their associated impacts across sectors and different sections of society. This multi-hazard profile of the city with the ever-increasing frequency and severity of hazards calls for building a culture of resilience in all spheres. It is thus important that local authorities take actions to improve their resilience to address future disaster events to make communities safer

We work on various aspects of disaster management to address unique geographical and environmental challenges of Nashik. We ensure inter agency coordination with several line departments, undertake preventive measures ahead of disasters, carry out risk-informed development planning, and design our plans and policies in accordance with several national and international guidelines / frameworks. We keep the vulnerable community at forefront in our preparedness planning to help build their resilience. The planning and response actions in the city are carried out by a trained Emergency Response Team (ERT) available with the fire department of NMC along with close cooperation with all line departments of the Corporation. The technical support from United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is assisting us taking preparedness and mitigation measures at the city level that include geo-spatial risk analysis of flood for urban local development planning, multi-hazard risk assessment, training and capacity building to name a few under Disaster Risk management Program.
